Packaging and Retail Display Manufacturing in Vietnam
Printed packaging, rigid boxes and point of sale displays are usually made by a different manufacturer than the product itself, and matched artwork approval is where most delays happen.
What this scope usually covers
- Printed cartons and insertsOffset or digital printed retail cartons, inserts and hang tags, color matched to your artwork files.
- Rigid and specialty boxesRigid set-up boxes, magnetic closures and specialty finishes for premium retail packaging.
- Point of sale displaysCardboard, wood or metal display units built to hold a set quantity of product, often palletized ready to place on a shop floor.
- Combined shipmentPackaging made and shipped together with the product it holds, so retail-ready cartons arrive rather than empty boxes for a separate assembly step.
What to put in your brief
Manufacturers quote faster and closer to a final number when this is stated up front rather than found during a back and forth.
- Print files in the format the manufacturer’s press uses, and whether you need a physical proof before the full run.
- Pantone or spot color matches versus CMYK, since the difference changes cost and press choice.
- Structural specs for rigid boxes or displays: wall thickness, load weight, and whether it ships flat or assembled.
- Whether packaging ships with the product in the same container or separately.
Where first orders go wrong
- Color approved on screen, not on a printed proofScreen color and press color are different. Approve a physical proof before the full print run, not a PDF.
- Packaging and product on separate timelinesIf the box factory and the product factory are not coordinated, one waits for the other at the port. Ask who owns that coordination in the contract.
- Display load capacity untestedA cardboard display quoted for a light product can fail under a heavier one. State the loaded weight, not just the product count.
Questions buyers ask
Can the same manufacturer make my product and my packaging?
Sometimes, if the product factory runs a print shop, but more often packaging is a separate manufacturer coordinated under the same turnkey contract so one shipment leaves ready for retail.
What lead time should I plan for custom packaging?
Plate or die setup and a color proof usually add 2 to 4 weeks ahead of the production timeline for the product itself. Say your ship date in the brief so this is planned in, not discovered late.
